I have FINALLY-after many tedious and agonizing months, decided to give in to "pull-ups" for my pee trained-but NOT poo trained son. I realize how petty this is to you who have no children underfoot, and franlkly I cannot myself believe I am ACTUALLY blogging about this. But perhaps it is the sheer volume of poop that I am dealing with these days-that causes me to write this rather desperate change in tactic.
I was so excited about the whole aspect of cutting down the disposable diaper waste-when Finn said he wanted to use the potty back in September. He definately has all the coolest underwear an almost 3 year old could have, for sure. And he is brilliant in the #1 department. But as we hit month 5 of "pooping in my underwear", the Mama here-who is trying sooooo hard to patient and say 'its ok, it is just fine, no problem'-is giving up her environmental moral almost entirely and is going to pull-ups fulltime.
very difficult for some insane reason, an thus this entry sounds like a confession.
another lofty ideal thrown away...ah, a loss of innocense..or shall i say naivity?!

You can have my share of environmental credits for all those necessary-to-your-sanity child disposables that I won't be using. You still do better than most of us at that kind of thing. And you can share your poop trials any time. I'm here for ya, babe!

I listened to an environmentalist who now runs the recycling program at our big land fill here. Someone asked about the disposable vs. cloth diaper thing and she said that disposable diapers actually take up a very low percentage of waste (surprisingly in a town of 130,000 people) and that you have to weigh how much extra water you might be using because you are having to wash a lot of extra diapers/underwear. So maybe you can look at it as balancing out the extra water you would use if you always having to wash out underwear??? In any case, let the guilt fly off, girl and give yourself a break! You are doing what is best for you and your family and we LOVE you for it!

Trust me, one day you will look back on this and laugh, and then you'll wonder why it was such a big deal, and then you will know that it was such a big deal because you were just IN THE MIDDLE OF IT, and that was all it was. And then life will go on and there will be something else...

I hear you and feel your pain!! you won't go through very many pull ups b/c he is going pee on the potty, right?. The sanity, extra time you will save and the nerve damage you preserve using pull ups far out way of the cost and enviromental "damage" from pull ups.... I used them too.
